Up-Chucking

“I've actually gotten a lot better, I don't vomit as much as I used to! Because of the fitness training I've been doing, the sessions have become a lot easier for me. Usually the sessions I do vomit in are speed endurance sessions, which I've just started doing now. But my conditioning sessions on Monday mornings help me handle those sessions, hopefully without vomiting.”

Fuelling

“I don't deny myself anything. If I want a piece of chocolate, I'll have it. At this time of the training phase, it's not as bad because I'm doing a lot of fitness stuff and I can burn it off quickly. Whereas in my speed endurance phase and tapering down phase, that's where I really have to start thinking about what I'm eating; I'm not doing as much training or burning off as many calories.

“I tend to eat every two hours: I'll have breakfast at 8:30am and then a morning snack at 10:30am, lunch at 12:30pm and an afternoon snack at 2:30pm, then training, then dinner at around 6:00pm.”

Australian Season

“I have my major competition around August or September, and then I'll go back to Europe afterwards and still be tapering down, not having to train as much. Because the Australian season is so much earlier, in February and March, we have to start training a lot earlier than people in other countries. But because I can handle the qualifiers really easily, I don't have to continue to race after the National Championships in March, trying to chase a qualifying time for later that year. I can go into base training again. But for most athletes it's quite hard because they have to continue running at their best to try to qualify. I'll go into the Australian season in heavy training because I'm able to run the qualifying times even after a heavy session the day before. I'm really quite lucky in that respect.”

“In the Australian season, everyone expects me to run well, because I usually do. But that just makes me more of a fierce competitor. I like to please the crowd and to please myself. Every time I get out on the track I compete at 100 percent and if I record a bad time I’ll be upset, even though I'm not in my main phase of competition.”
