Green v Mundine: Let's get it started

What's more boring than listening to an Anthony Mundine press conference? Listening to Mundine and Danny Green talk about getting it on, in the ring, finally. Until we have the pair of 'em at joint press conference revealing the date of their stink, both should ban themselves from saying the other's name. It's becoming a bore.

Mundine was the last to open his trap about it, declaring in the ring after his sixth-round victory over Tanzanian Rashid Matumla at Canberra's AIS Stadium on Wednesday night that he was finally ready to get it on. ``Green ain't no machine. He's going to get beat by Mundine . . . It's pretty much a foregone conclusion. I've told [manager] Khoder Nasser to get his signature as quickly as possible. We've been negotiating for three or four months, now it's getting close.''

This from the fella who for two years said he didn't want to fight a ``bum'' like Green. Now, after losing the world-title fight against Mikkel Kessler earlier this year, he wants to get it on. Australia Day has been slated as the day. Nasser travels to Perth this week to discuss the fight with Green's management. Hopefully, by the end of their meeting, it will be set in stone.

Is this the fight Australian boxing has to have? Perhaps. It certainly felt that way earlier this year. Mundine did not pack the Sydney Entertainment Centre when he fought Kessler. You would hardly have known he was fighting last night. Vic Darchinyan retained his IBF and IBO world flyweight titles with a fifth-round stoppage of Columbian Jair Jimenez at the Syd. Ent. Cent. in late August . . . remember?

The word is that Kostya Tszyu wants to fight on after his loss to Ricky Hatton earlier this year, which is crazy. You can bet that long-time trainer Johnny Lewis does not want it to happen, and probably won't be in the champ's corner if he decides to fight. Regardless, with Kostya on the wane, Australian boxing needs a new champion. It could be Anthony Mundine, it could be Danny Green. Let's hope the pair get it on sooner than later.

Boxing loves its smack talk to a point.
