Sauber driver Pascal Wehrlein has been deemed unfit to start in the Chinese Grand Prix after pulling out of Formula 1's season-opener in Australia.
Wehrlein could also miss the third grand prix of the year, in Bahrain, as battle to regain fitness after injuring his back in a crash January's Race of Champions event in Miami continues.
Ferrari test driver Antonio Giovinazzi stood in for Wehrlein in Melbourne. The Sauber team has confirmed the Italian and will continue with the team until Wehrlein regains fitness.
While Wehrlein did drive the Sauber in pre-season testing, his injury has prevented him from undertaking the heavy physical training required for a modern F1 driver.
In Melbourne for the season opener, the German struggled to achieve consistent lap times during the second Friday practice session and subsequently withdrew from the event.
Giovinazzi stepped in at the last minute to replace Wehrlein, and drove impressively to finish 12th on his F1 debut.
"For me the most important [thing] is that I can train intensively to ensure a 100 percent performance from my side as soon as possible," Wehrlein said.
"I will then be well-prepared for my first complete grand prix weekend for the Sauber F1 team.
"Hopefully this can be in Bahrain but, if not, then we will take the time it needs until Russia to make sure I am completely ready."
