The fourth-seeded Federer overcame two match points before beating No.10 seed Tomas Berdych 6-2 3-6 7-6 (8-6).

Australian Open winner Federer and Kyrgios were due to meet in the quarter-finals at Indian Wells a fortnight ago, however, the Australian was forced to withdraw due to illness.
