He’s infamous for shooting off his mouth but Nick Kyrgios showed restraint in refusing to add fire to Roger Federer’s claims the Australian is “not ready” to win a grand slam.
Federer told reporters the 21-year-old would not win a major anytime soon, let alone the Australian Open, stating if former No.1 Lleyton Hewitt couldn’t do it on home soil, how could Kyrgios?
The Aussie strolled through to the second round in Melbourne after annihilating Portugal’s Gastao Elias 6-1 6-2 6-2 in less than 90 minutes on Monday night.
Never one to hold back, Kyrgios was humble in responding to Federer’s claims when quizzed following his round one victory.

“I’m not going to say anything about it,” he said.
“Obviously it’s his opinion. We’ll see. I’ve done everything I can so far. I don’t really know what to say. What can I say? The guy is Roger. Like, I can’t say anything to him.
“It doesn’t bother me at all. I know that he’s the greatest of all time. I know that I just have to do my own thing.”
Federer downed Austrian Jurgen Melzer 7-5 3-6 6-2 6-2 and will face American Noah Rubin their second round match-up.
