Known as a hard-running centre, Wells had a very dark side to him.

He mixed drug and alcohol addictions with wild group sex romps organised over the internet after retiring from football.

On his 45th birthday in July 2015, he and his sex partner, Theresa Anne Blair, raped a 14-year-old girl after plying her with alcohol and cannabis.

Blair restrained the victim as she was being sexually assaulted by Wells.

Newcastle District Court was told the girl was still haunted by the attack and had made an attempt on her life.

Wells was sentenced to six years' jail for aggravated rape with a non-parole period of four years.

Blair was jailed for five years and three months with a non-parole period of three years and six months.
