Joe Root has joined his contemporaries of the new breed of batting prodigy – Kane Williamson, Virat Kohli and Steve Smith – as captain of his national side.
His appointment, confirmed today by the England and Wales Cricket Board, comes as no surprise, as virtually no other names have been put forward since Alastair Cook resigned last week.
Director of Cricket and former skipper Andrew Strauss says Root accepted the job immediately.
Root’s vice-captain will be the aggressive, talented all-rounder Ben Stokes. Cook, one of the best opening batsmen in the world, is expected to remain part of the side.
