Australian T20 assistant coach Ricky Ponting has endorsed Brad Hogg for national honours after a blistering start to the Big Bash league.
The 45-year-old has not played for Australia since 2014 but his undeniable form has him primed for a call-up.
Ponting has urged selectors to overlook his age and bring the veteran back in to the national team.
“If he’s the best spinner in the Big Bash and clearly he’s the best spinner in the Big Bash, maybe he’s not done,” Ponting said.
“But it will be interesting to know the mantra of what the T20 selection is going to be. I’m an assistant coach obviously, but I’m not sure what the selection panel are going to say.
“If there was a World Cup around the corner and he’s the best spinner, then why not pick him regardless of his age.”
Australia are set to play a T20 series with Sri Lanka in March when the Test squad will be in India preparing for a three-Test series
