He would take up a caretaker role for the three-match T20 series against Sri Lanka when Lehmann and his players are in India preparing for the Test series.

Fellow ex-players Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey are also reportedly in the running for the gig with Cricket Australia confirming Warne had contacted them about the short-term role.

"We are speaking to a number of people about the prospect of coaching the KFC T20 international squad against Sri Lanka as our Bupa support team head coach and assistant coach, Darren Lehmann and David Saker respectively, will be in India,” a CA spokesman told Fairfax.

“At this stage no decision has been made on an appointment.”

Warne had in the past been critical of the role coaches played in national sides, however, his stance seems to have cooled.
