Uniquely, Red Bull Racing Australia opted for an off-track retro look, with post-war 1950s/60s style tweed suits for the drivers and crew chiefs, and lab coats and white overalls for the crew. Good to see Shane van Gisbergen wearing a tie…

DJR Team Penske combines a legendary American motor racing name with an Australian one, so it was fitting that its two cars reflected the respective pasts of both Dick Johnson and Roger Penske. On the DJR side of things, the 17 Falcon featured a recreation of the team’s 2003/04 livery.3 / 16
Same circuit, same paintjob, 14 years apart… Dick Johnson and son Steven had been heavily involved in the original design for the 2003/04 livery – that’s why Dick chose it for the retro round.

On the Penske side of things, DJR Team Penske opted for Mark Donohue’s Sunoco Special McLaren – a particularly exceptional machine in the long and illustrious history of Team Penske. It was first Penske car to win the Indy 500, in 1972.

Those that think the mobile billboard liveries on today’s Supercars leave a lot to be desired will have loved the simple austerity of the Michael Caruso/Dean Fiore Altima.

The Caruso red colour scheme refers back half a century to the occasion of Nissan’s first class win at Bathurst, with this Datsun 1300. Good to see the Datsun name back in action on the track…

The problem with retro liveries is the potential for conflicting sponsorship logos. One way to avoid that is to run your current sponsor’s own retro livery – or in this case, the sponsor’s car’s livery. Thus the Percat/McConville Commodore raced in the white/green colours of the speedway sedan which sponsor Phil Munday ran back in the late ‘70s.

PRA showed that cars can look good in purple/yellow/red livery, just like the Supercheap Auto Falcon did in 2002.

The AU model Falcon was an unloved machine and the least successful racing Falcons of all time, but it did look the part (well, you couldn't miss it) in that striking Supercheap Auto colour scheme.

Garry Rogers Motorsport and Volvo might not be on the best of terms right now but that didn't stop Rogers from honouring Volvo’s magnificent championship victory in Australia 30 years ago.

Before he was a Supercars team owner, Brad Jones was a pretty handy driver. In the early ‘90s he was almost unbeatable in stock car racing at the Thunderdome. Brad’s Coopers Tools AUSCAR Commodore provided the inspiration for this neat plain red look.
