Maric, known for his glorious mullet, is a fan favourite down in Tigerland, but managed just three games of top flight in 2016 due to a back injury.

Shaun Thompson also became the club’s first pick ruckman, but that didn’t stop Richmond from securing the 30-year-old for another year, his 12th in the AFL.

“After a personally testing year, I took time to consider my options, but ultimately the friendships and connections I have with my teammates make Richmond my home, and where I belong,” Maric said.

“I believe I am capable of playing good football at AFL level, and will continue to show guidance and leadership on and off the field.”

Richmond general manager of football Dan Richardson said the club was pleased to have Maric for 2017.

“We’ve been in discussions with Ivan for a number of weeks, and we’re really pleased he’s staying with us in 2017,” he said.

“Ivan is a fierce competitor and gives his all in every training session and game he plays, and his teammates thrive off that.

“He’s also a great leader and positive role model, not just for his teammates, but everyone at the Club, and we look forward to seeing more of that in 2017.”
