The AFL have invited fallen Essendon legend James Hird to present the Norm Smith Medal at this year's Grand Final.
Hird's life has been in turmoil since falling from grace for his involvement as Essendon coach during the club's supplements saga.
The former Bombers star attempted to take his own life earlier this year, but the AFL have reached out with the opportunity to reintegrate into the game.
Hird won the 2000 Norm Smith Medal and, as is AFL tradition, former medal winners present the award for best afield at the Grand Final.
"I hope James accepts the invitation," AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said.
"I hope people see the opportunity in that."
The 1999 Norm Smith Medal winner Shannon Grant presented the award at last year's decider, going to Jason Johannisen.
Chronologically, Hird is next and McLachlan wanted people to look past his perception following the drugs issue.
"I have such faith in our football supporters," McLachlan said.
"It has the potential to be a significant wrapping of our arms around James. It might not. I'm an optimist."
