Thompson won in 3hr2min to post a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win against the United States at Pat Rafter Arena on Friday.

The third-ranked Australian, who was selected ahead of Bernard Tomic, is ranked 79 in the world.

“It is probably my best win, (best of) five sets over a guy No.15 in the world,’’ Thompson said.

“It’s great having so many Australian players who I grew up with on the sidelines. I don’t get too nervous or wound up too badly, but there is a little extra pressure.”
