Meninga poured petrol on the international rivalry after declaring the England coach, “wants my job but he hasn’t got it”.

Bennett put his hand up for the vacant Kangaroos role after Tim Sheens’ contract was not renewed at the end of 2015.

Meninga took the appointment from under him prompting Bennett, who quit as Australia coach in 2005, to take up coaching England.

“I’m very happy with the English job right now,” Bennett told the press.

“I’m happy with the decision I made. I’m enjoying working with the team, they’re a great group of blokes.”
