Carlton forward Dennis Armfield has confirmed he will retire at the end of the 2017 AFL season.
The 30-year-old told his teammates on Monday afternoon before it was made public on Tuesday.
Armfield was drafted to Carlton in 2007 after switching from Rugby Union.
He went on to make his AFL debut for the club in 2008, amassing almost 150 games for the club.
“Carlton has obviously been incredibly special to me over the past decade. This place has been my second home and the people; my second family. I am indebted to the club,” Armfield said in a statement.
“I have no doubt it’s going to be pretty hard to leave, the friends and memories I have made here will stay with me for life. But, with the number of exciting young players now coming through, the time feels right to call time.
“I also want to thank our fans for their incredible support over the journey too – they are the lifeblood. As a club, we’re now well and truly on the right path and I hope my teammates experience the ultimate success in the not too distant future.”
