A civil suit was filed in the United States overnight accusing Hayne of rape.

Hayne spent a season in the US with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL and is accused of non-consensual sexual intercourse in December 2015.

“The club has been made aware of serious allegations regarding Jarryd Hayne during his time with the San Francisco 49ers,” Eels chairman Max Donnelly said via a statement.

“We were unaware of these allegations until they were made public today.

“As with any legal matter, it is important that we follow due process and ensure that we review all relevant information available, including giving Jarryd the opportunity to respond.

“The club will continue to monitor the situation and when appropriate we will provide an update to members and media.”

The case was formerly rejected in October last year due to insufficient evidence.

The suit claims the victim, known only as Ms.V, was a virgin at the time and did not notify authorities for several months reporting the rape to the police in May of 2016.

Civil suits generally seek a financial outcome rather than criminal charges.

An NRL spokesman told NRL.com the Integrity Unit would continue to monitor the situation.

“We note that the police in the United States did not proceed with any criminal proceedings but we will review the information available and continue to monitor the civil case,” a spokesman said.
