Catch up with Jye Kearney after his epic aussie season.
FAST FIVE WITH JYE KEARNEY
So Jye, 2011 was a big year for you, turning 18 and then going on to rule the majority of the aussie comps during the season, scoring the cover shot of our latest issue #52 in Thredbo, and having a sick film part in Go Seek as well. What was your highlight?
It would be the comps for sure as they where a personal goal I had set at the beginning of the season, the cover and all the prize money are an added bonus.
Which comps did you win this year and which one meant the most to you?
Yeah just a few hey haha! The Burton Cattlemans Rail Jam, Mt Dew Hut Jam and Gatorade rookie award, Stylewars 28 Stairs Rail Jam, Thredbo Freeride Series and the Perisher PS3 Night Series. The one that meant the most would be both the Cattlemans and the Stylewars rail event as I have been traveling to them for years now so to finally get on top was insane. Stoked!
Have you changed anything with the way you prepare for the comps, how do you handle the pressure and still stomp the best tricks?
I don't really feel the pressure in comps so much anymore as I have been doing them for a while now and it just feels like a normal day riding to me.
You even had a spell as #1 at the top of the TTR World Ranking early in the season, can you see yourself chasing the comp tour in the future?
The TTR is something I do think about and I could see myself adapting to it in the future.
What's next on your 'To Do' list in snowboarding?
I love to do it all which is a good balance I think! Hopefully get an international filming gig, and there are still plenty of places I haven't ridden yet like Japan and Canada. I want to do some comps amongst it all, and just have fun with it.
