Khawaja last week criticised selectors for making he and Joe Burns the “scapegoats” following a miserable Test series against Sri Lanka after the pair were dropped for the third Test.

But his comments to the press have not stopped Khawaja from being recalled for next week’s opening Test against South Africa in Perth, however, Burns was not named.

Marsh took delight in reminding Khawaja that talking to the media about team matters isn’t the way to go about things.

“He probably opened his mouth before his brain had got working,” Marsh said after announcing the Test squad.

“It might have been early in the morning ... he loves a sleep in, Uzzie.

“It wasn’t the smartest thing he’s said, but that’s life.”

Australia squad for the first two Test matches: Steve Smith (c), David Warner (vc), Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Mitch Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Joe Mennie, Peter Nevill, Peter Siddle, Mitch Starc, Adam Voges
