While the final specification is yet to be determined, the new images show a prototype design clearly in its advanced stages. According to Indycar, it has been ‘reverse-designed to start with a look of past Indy car favourites while also incorporating the latest technological and safety advancements’.

The new bodywork design will come in separate configurations: one for superspeedway ovals and the other for street courses, road courses and short ovals.

All teams will use the universal aerodynamic bodywork kit in 2018; previously Chevrolet and Honda – the two engine Indycar suppliers – had the option of developing their own bodywork.
