The NRL has rejected North Sydney's bid to re-join the competition.
The club’s proposal to take over the Gold Coast Titans has been shunted in devastating news for Bears fans, the Courier Mail reports.
The Bears wanted to change the name of the club to the Gold Coast Bears and play some home games at North Sydney Oval.
The club merged with Manly to form the Northern Eagles in 2000 before the Sea Eagles re-entered the NRL as a sole entity in 2003.
Former North Sydney legend Greg Florimo led the consortium to buy the Titans, however, the NRL is instead finalising a deal for purchase by another group.
The sale of the club is expected to be finalised in November.
