South Sydney are in line to sign troubled half Kieran Foran for 2017.
A deal with the Warriors was all but done after Foran verbally agreed to join the club in 2017 for about $600,000, however Souths have emerged as contenders to sign the Kiwi representative after meeting with him earlier this week.
The Bulldogs are also in the hunt and are believed to have more space in the cap to accommodate the premiership-winner whose market value is believed to be more than $1 million.
But the Rabbitohs are desperate for a quality half to cover the loss of Luke Keary to the Roosters with long-term halfback Adam Reynolds reportedly on shaky ground at the club.
Signing to a Sydney club would mean Foran could remain close to his children but the NRL will only rubber stamp a contract if Foran is deemed mentally fit.
The 25-year-old was signed to a four-year $4.8 million with the Eels before being granted a release earlier this year due to personal issues.
