The Raiders’ charge at the 2016 premiership has been dealt a massive blow after star five-eighth Blake Austin suffered a potential season-ending injury.
Austin suffered a broken hand during a defensive training session on Wednesday and will undergo surgery Thursday.
The 25-year-old will be out for an indefinite period which could be for the rest of the season.
Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said the injury would be a challenge for the team, but one they can overcome.
“It was a very simple accident and very unfortunate for Blake,” he said.
“As I said last week we are not a one man team and Sam Williams will come into the team now and we know he’ll do a great job for us.
“This will challenge us and everybody has to buy in and assist in picking up the slack.”
Austin has been instrumental in the Raiders' surge to this year's NRL Premiership.
The Raiders refused to make any further comment on Austin’s injury.
