Canberra’s Sia Soliola has been suspended for five games for a sickening hit on Billy Slater which saw the Qld fullback knocked out cold.
Alarmingly, the Raiders backrower was not even sent from the field despite the offence being referred straight to the judiciary by the match review committee, meaning the hit was deemed so bad it could not be graded.
Slater was taken from GIO Stadium on a medicab and is expected to miss this week’s match against Manly.
Soliola’s defence argued the hit was careless and not reckless and tried for a three-week suspension due to Slater falling into the tackle.
But in a hearing which lasted 100 minutes, NRL counsel Anthony Lo Surdo said the hit was reckless and deserved a six-week ban.
Soliola will be back for the Raiders’ round 26 game against the Storm.
