LIV, the PGA, the PIF, and all that: Gav Kirkman on where Australia sits in golf's ecosystem

In part two of our feature piece with PGA of Australia chief Gavin Kirkman, we discuss Australia's position in the great PGA Tour versus LIV Golf imbroglio, how to attract international players to our 'major' tournaments ("have you heard of the Whitsundays?"), and why Australia has aligned with the 'European' tour when there's a Saudi-funded Asian one on our doorstep. 20 Nov 2024

CLEARY: PGA or LIV, major or minor, every pro golf tournament is an exhibition

CLEARY: PGA or LIV, major or minor, every pro golf tournament is an exhibition

One of the sledges about LIV Golf is that it’s nothing more than an exhibition of highly-paid players, out there, playing for nothing, writhing in money, what else could possibly be their motivation, it’s meaningless, an aberration, something-something, and so on. And people, in manifold ways, can make a case. 16 Sep 2024

Column: Remember who we are dealing with

You see it far too often and at far too many junior golf tournaments, practice facilities and in other sports as well. This means it is probably happening in the car ride home or at the dinner table, which is even more concerning. 17 Jul 2024

This week The Open returns to Royal Troon for the 10th time across its 152-year history. While not as popular with the tourists as some of the other glamour courses across Scotland, this layout’s claim to fame is the mental challenge it presents to those brave enough to take it on. 16 Jul 2024

Where dreams are made... and broken

Where dreams are made... and broken

It’s long been decreed by those dungeon masters of the United States Golf Association that U.S Open venues must have super-thin fairways and thick, chunky, chop-it-sideways rough. Thus, the first two times Pinehurst No.2 hosted the national championship (1999 and 2005), it was a beast more penal than Pentridge. Yet the USGA appears to have mellowed, and bucked the trend of punishment for the sake of it. And it’s been Pinehurst at the vanguard. And this year's U.S Open should be entertaining indeed. 12 Jun 2024
