Wayne Bennett has hit back at speculation his job is on the line following Brisbane’s 26-18 Round 1 win over Cronulla on Thursday night.
Several media outlets, including Brisbane’s main metropolitan newspaper, have reported the seven-time premiership coach has lost the dressing room.
But that did not look the case last night as the Broncos ran out decisive winners over the reigning premiers at shark park.
Quizzed after the game if he thought the win may silence some of the conjecture surrounding his future at Red Hill, Bennett said:
“I have always let my teams do my talking for me.”
“White smoke has been coming out of Sydney full-time for about a month now, so, it is what it is.”

Brisbane replacement forward Alex Glenn was concussed late in the second half and did not return.
But it did not seem to worry the visitors who never looked troubled.
“It was scrappy but it was a very intense game, a very tough game,” Bennett said.
“Just our refusal to give in. We were a player down at half-time there and put a lot more pressure than everybody else. They played a pretty good second half Cronulla and we just stayed at it.”
Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan said errors and penalties cost his side dearly.
“You can’t win football games when you turn the ball over and give penalties away,” he said. “We were 10-5 in errors conceding possession and 10-5 in penalties, so, we just gave them too much football.
“I thought we were coming to get them at one stage until the Milford try. It is disappointing considering the standards we set ourselves.”
