Ali Fahour stood down from AFL diversity role as police launch investigation into his on-field punch that has seen him banned for life
The AFL have accepted the resignation of diversity manager Ali Fahour after he was banned for life for punching an opponent during a suburban game.
Fahour was given a 14-week suspension by the Northern Football League for knocking Whittlesea player Dale Saddington unconscious.
But previous bans meant automatic deregistration and being barred from playing or officiating for life.
Police have now confirmed they are investigating the incident and AFL boss Gillon McLachlan confirmed Fahour has been stood down from his previous role with the organisation.
“As Ali himself said this week – there is no excuse or defence for his actions last weekend. He has expressed his remorse and shame, and I know that he feels this very deeply,” McLachlan said.
“The events this week have sent a clear message that striking and punching at any level of our game is not acceptable.
“Ali has accepted the outcome of the tribunal and has resigned from a job that he cares deeply about.”
