WATERSKIING: A SNAPSHOT

The latest figures on sports participation show that there are an amazing 1.3 million social water skiers and wakeboarders in Australia. So perhaps it’s a surprise that there are just 3500 competitive members of Waterski and Wakeboard Australia, the sport’s national governing body? Maybe not. Maybe those slim numbers deceive: this is a sport where those who choose to compete are the hard core, such is their passion for this exhilarating and spectacular sport. But for most people, the competition is the personal challenge – and the thrill is in the participation itself. Such are the attractions of this incredible sport.

At that elite end, Australia packs a punch on the world stage, with numerous Aussies challenging in all the various disciplines. For example, the Aussie Tournament team finished a credible seventh at the recent Under 21 Worlds in Spain, with Steph Griffith a finalist in the jump and superstar Josh Briant taking Gold in Tricks and overall.
