Matt Gillett was outstanding for the hosts as they stifled Penrith’s attack which had no answer for Brisbane’s relentless defence that repelled consistent sets on their own line.

The Broncos took a slim 6-0 lead into the break courtesy of a Corey Oates try and a penalty goal before running away with the win in the second half.

Oates was taken from the field after a nasty clash with team mate Anthony Milford late in the first half and did not return.

The Panthers lacked cohesion with the ball despite several attacking opportunities in the Broncos' red zone.

A James Roberts try mid-way through the second stanza put Brisbane ahead 12-0.

A late try to Reagan Campbell-Gillard gave the visitors some hope before the Broncos held out a late attacking raid.

A 70th-minute field goal from Jordan Kahu iced a deserved win built on a willingness to turn up on every play.

Halfback Benji Marshall enjoyed a solid kicking game and put victory down to playing for one another.

“We just turned up for each other,” Marshall told Channel Nine.

“They have a big forward pack and we held them out.

“I am looking forward to next week.”

The Broncos now travel to Melbourne’s AAMI Park to face a Storm outfit which have largely had the wood over them for almost a decade.
