Western Bulldogs forward Tom Boyd is being treated for clinical depression.

The 21-year-old has been given leave of absence by his club due to his mental health issues.

The Bulldogs said Boyd has been dealing with the illness for a while before they decided to give him a complete break from footy.

“Tom has managed his illness in conjunction with the Bulldogs’ medical staff for an extended period, and will continue to receive the club’s full support as he works through this challenge,” they said in a statement.

“Tom has indicated a desire to return to playing as soon as possible, and the club will work closely with Tom and the Bulldogs’ medical staff to determine a suitable time for reintegration into the training program.

“The club will continue to provide an extensive support framework to help Tom manage his illness, and asks for the respect for Tom’s position during this time.”

Boyd has been a high-profile player ever since he was number one pick in the 2013 draft for GWS Giants. Just a year later he joined the Bulldogs on a seven-year $7m contract, but by the end of his first season he was dropped to VFL grade action.

However, he bounced back and helped the Bulldogs to a famous Grand Final victory over Sydney Swans in 2016.

His team-mate Travis Cloke also took a leave of absence to deal with mental health issues a fortnight ago.
