At Ericsson Stadium in Round 23 of the 2002 season, two of the toughest hombres in rugby league came to blows in an event still vivid in the memory banks of many followers of the 13-player code.
On this week’s edition of Inside Sport’s Dead In Goal podcast, retired rugby league journeyman and all-round tough nut Kevin Campion generously recollects the moments which led to his dance with his former Broncos and Maroons team-mate Shane Webcke.
The pair are, of course, good mates after all these years, but Campion’s telling of the lead-up to his punch-up with Webby makes for fantastic listening. “We certainly laugh about it now, Webby and I,” Campion, the 214-game veteran recalls for Dead In Goal.

“About five minutes before it, Brent Tate, who was an up and comer, just a new kid on the block … I put a nice tackle on Brent and he threw a couple of punches at me. I grabbed him, but thought, ‘Oh, he’s probably a bit too young for this.’ So I let him go.
“So I was already angry. I shot out of the line and put a hit on Webby. It was a nice tackle. But I think he got a bit angry that I was holding the ball and he couldn’t play it quickly enough. So he threw a bit of a jab at me. I really can’t remember much after that ... I just started throwing them. Lucky for me a few of them landed straight on his chin!
For the record, the Warriors won that match 18-4, with the New Zealand-based side finishing the home and away season as minor premiers.
