Casey Stoner could have won as many MotoGP titles as he wanted, according to his former engineer Ramon Forcada.
Forcada, one of the most well-respected figures in the MotoGP paddock, worked with Stoner when the Australian made his premier-class debut with LCR in 2006.
While Stoner started the season strongly, scoring a podium in just the third race of the year, the rest of his campaign was marred by constant crashes.
He did not finish six of the 16 races he started, but when he did finish it was no lower than in eighth position, showing his potential.
"There were 23 crashes in total during that year and all of them were because of the front tyre," Forcada told Motorsport.com.
However, after switching from Honda to Ducati in 2007, and from Michelin to Bridgestone tyres, the Aussie went on to win the Championship with an impressive 10 race victories.
A battle with a mystery illness saw him miss out on the chance of another title at Ducati, but Stoner went on to claim the 2011 Championship with the Repsol Honda outfit.
Despite only working with Stoner for a brief period, Forcada is adamant Stoner - who retired from the sport in 2012 - could have easily laid his hands on more silverware.
"I have never known someone with such an innate talent as him," Forcada said.
"He could have won as many titles as he wanted."
