Titans coach Neil Henry says star signing Jarryd Hayne will likely come off the bench in Sunday’s match against the Warriors.
The 28-year-old’s general fitness is not in question after the former Australian representative’s recent stint with the Fiji sevens team.
However, after not playing an NRL match for almost two years, Henry is in no rush to slot Hayne into the starting 13.
“Whether or not he starts or comes off the bench, I’d say that if he gets to training and he’s okay (on Thursday), we’d look at him somewhere in the 17,” Henry told Fox Sports.
“I’d guess he’d come off the interchange bench.”
Five-eighth Tyrone Roberts is unlikely to play in the match with Cameron Cullen expected to wear the No.6 jumper.
That opens up a spot on the bench for the versatile Hayne who can play fullback, wing, centre and five-eighth.
“Tyrone Roberts is in a lot doubt for the game, he hurt his posterior cruciate ligament and in fact is highly unlikely to play,” Henry said.
“That means we need to do a shuffle around our halves regardless, so it does open up an opportunity for Jarryd to be on the bench straight away this weekend.
“We can shuffle our backline around.
“Meady’s been doing a great job there and we’re very conscious, and so is Jarryd, about not upsetting what we’ve achieved so far.”
Hayne has signed a two-year-deal with the Gold Coast worth about $1.2 million a year.
