The 38-year-old AFL Premiership-winner was in court Thursday and claimed his children ran to him after he dropped off a car to his former partner Maylea Tinecheff.

But police said the children ran when their mother opened the door with Cousins taking them to a park prompting her to call police.

The police prosecutor asked to have Cousins' bail upheld but Magistrate Jennifer Hawkins refrained and said Cousins should be in the presence of his senior lawyer, Michael Tudori.

Tudori will represent Cousins at his court appearance next week on separate VRO and drug charges.

Ms Hawkins fined Cousins $600 plus $98.50 in costs.

She also took into consideration the fact Cousins had spent two nights in custody.

"I'm trusting that you've learned your lesson," Hawkins said.

The latest episode caps a tough couple of months for the former West Coast Eagles captain after he was issued with an arrest warrant last month for failing to appear in court on the original VRO and drug charges.

The next day, Cousins was involved in a crash when police allegedly found him in possession of methamphetamine.
