Reports surfaced Monday night regarding Whitfield’s alleged attempts to dodge a drug test last year which the AFL is currently investigating.

The controversy could not have come at a worse time for the Giants as they prepare for their first finals series after a stellar season in which they finished fourth and sit just two wins away from a grand final.

Cameron said he expected his side and Whitfield to be unaffected by the ongoing investigation.

He said Whitfield would take his place in the team as the club aimed to down its 'big brother' Sydney.

“At this stage, absolutely (he will play),” Cameron said.

“It is obviously not ideal, but he is doing okay and has been around his teammates.”

In May 2015 Whitfield reportedly stayed at the home of former Giants welfare manager Craig Lambert on the advice of then football manager Graeme Allan out of fear of failing an illicit drugs test.

The events took place after Whitfield’s ex-girlfriend made contact with Allan and raised the issue of illicit drug use by Whitfield.

Allan waited until July last year to inform the club.

The Giants immediately contacted the AFL triggering the ongoing investigation.

“That will sort itself out in time but at this stage he will be there next Saturday,” Cameron said.

“In terms of where we are situated it’s not going to affect us at all.

“He’s good.”

The AFL released a statement regarding the issue late Friday.

"The AFL wishes to advise the League’s Integrity Department has been conducting a detailed investigation into a matter involving a current-listed player of the GWS Giants Football Club, and two members of staff, who have since left the club but remain employed within the industry," the statement said.

"The AFL was notified by the GWS Giants of an allegation by a member of the public.

"The AFL will now forward its completed brief to the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA)."
