ROWING: A SNAPSHOT

There are few sights in sport more majestic than a rowing eight in full flight, heaving its way across a finish line in perfect synchronisation. Those who have experienced this feeling in a crew describe it as one of sport’s great thrills – the harmonisation of extreme effort required involves hours of dedication and practice, but the benefits in health and joyful participation are matched in few other sporting spheres. In fact, rowing has a rich history of participation in Australia, and still thrives – there are around 60,000 people who row competitively in Australia, operating out of 185 clubs and 250 schools. It has also been one of the most productive sports for our country at Olympic and Paralympic level, delivering numerous medals over the years.

Rowing Australia, the governing body for the sport, recently launched the Australian Indoor Rowing Championships which saw over 500 competitors racing across the country in rowing clubs, gyms and schools across the country. So here’s a challenge. Why not give it a go? There’s very likely a rowing club near you, and with its welcoming culture focused on fitness and inclusion – and possibly a few early mornings … it’s worth a go. Check out the RA website, including the special widget on the homepage where you can put your postcode in and find your nearest club!
