Andew Fifita’s threats to walk away from the NRL could help in Cronulla’s long-term success.
Fifita’s exit would immediately hurt Cronulla’s bid of back-to-back premierships, but with some of their biggest stars off-contract at the end of 2017, his absence might actually help the club retain some of the game's brightest stars.
Fairfax media reports Fifita is considering walking away from the final two years of his contract following his omission from the Australian team.
The 27-year-old is currently under investigation by the NRL integrity unit following his public support for his good mate and one-punch killer Kieran Loveridge.
The prop displayed the letters FKL across his armband during matches which is believed to have meant "Free Kieran Loveridge" or "For Kieran Loveridge".
A huge public outcry followed prompting Cronulla to release a statement quoting Fifita apologising for his actions, however less than a fortnight ago, he stated he had no regrets regarding the matter.
Fifita scored the winning try for the Sharks in Sunday nights’ NRL Grand Final to help deliver the club its first premiership in 50 years with many believing his performance was worthy of the Clive Churchill Medal as best on ground.
He is arguably the best prop in the game but the NRL and ARL determined Fifita was not of moral integrity, right now, to represent Australia.
“He is one of the best forwards in the game but you get selected on more than ability,” Australian coach Mal Meninga said.
Should Fifita leave it would free up significant funds to allow Cronulla to invest in its long-term future.
And with Kangaroos rookie Valentine Holmes, Origin star Jack Bird, Wade Graham and Ben Barba set to hit the market next year, the club needs all the cap space it can get.
Claiming the premiership will majorly increase their value with the Sharks set to be at the centre of a feeding frenzy as rival clubs swoop on the talent.
