Former Brisbane Lions player Albert Proud has been sentenced to five-and-a-half-years in jail for seriously assaulting his girlfriend after drinking heavily at a wedding late last year.
Proud pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm for the bashing of his partner last November.
He has been in custody since January.
Last November, his partner Richelle Kadadi was found with serious head injuries on a Brisbane street.
Proud punched the woman in the chest before she fell back and hit her head, the court was told at a January hearing.
An attempted murder charge was dropped due to a lack of evidence.
Ms Kadadi spent 33 days in hospital after undergoing emergency surgery and now suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, depression, fatigue and memory loss.
The couple had been together less than three months on the night of the attack.
The court was told Proud had consumed up to nine "beer bongs" and three post-party drinks.
