Jonathon Webb and Shane van Gisbergen had to be physically separated by crew members after an on-track exchange during Sydney Motorsport Park’s pre-season Supercars test.
It is believed that tempers flared as a result of minor contact between the two Holden drivers at high speed on the main straight. After the two had returned to pitlane, Webb sought out and confronted the Red Bull Holden Racing Team driver.
Webb grabbed the Kiwi by the driving suit and a flurry of yelling ensued before crew members intervened to separate the two drivers.
The two then retreated to their respective team transporters, although not long afterwards van Gisbergen was back in his car.
Later Webb downplayed the incident.
“I don’t know what happened out there, you’d have to ask Shane,” he told supercars.com.
Triple Eight/Red Bull HRT boss Dane told Supercars.com that no comment would be forthcoming from his team or driver.
Webb’s Tekno team is a long time customer of Dane’s Triple Eight squad, with Triple Eight supplying much of its racing hardware.
Van Gisbergen is a former Tekno driver, having raced for Webb’s team for three seasons before joining Red Bull in 2016. The pair also shared the victory in the 2016 Bathurst 12 Hour.
