Lance Franklin has labelled Anthony Mundine’s request for players to boycott the national anthem for Saturday's AFL Grand Final as “stupid”.
Mundine took to social media yesterday to voice his support for players to shun the anthem at the AFL and NRL Grand Finals as a way of bringing attention to injustices faced by indigenous Australians.
But Franklin, arguably the biggest Indigenous athlete in the country, vehemently disagreed with the controversial figure.
"First I've heard of it," Franklin said in Melbourne on Friday.
"Personally I think it's pretty stupid really, it's the Australian national anthem, it's a part of our sport, our history."
Referred to as a human headline, Mundine was heavily criticised for his post.

“Been saying this for years!” Mundine wrote.“The anthem was written in late 1700s where blackfullas were considered fauna (animals) advance Australia fair as in white not fair as in fair go.
“All players aboriginal & non aboriginal should boycott the anthem & start changing Australia’s ignorant mentality…lets move forward together yo.”
