Patrick Dangerfield will not be winning the Brownlow in 2017 after Geelong accepted his one-match ban.
Dangerfield was offered a one-game suspension by the AFL match review panel on Monday following his big hit on Carlton's Matthew Kreuzer.
Geelong confirmed on Tuesday they will be accepting the ban, electing not to appeal it incase they were unsuccessful, meaning Dangerfield would instead miss two games.
The one-week ban means Dangerfield is now officially out of the running for back-to-back Brownlow medals, for which he was a clear favourite.
“After seeking independent advice, the club has decided to accept the penalty handed down to Pat by the match review panel,” Geelong’s general manager of football Steve Hocking said.
“The club reviewed all possibilities around the case in coming to this decision. We respect the fact that the match review panel has a challenging and difficult role and has to operate under high scrutiny.
“While there has been a lot of debate around Pat’s eligibility for the Brownlow Medal, Pat and the club have at all times remained focussed on what is best for the team as we head towards to last part of the season.”
Geelong are second on the AFL ladder and are strong contenders for this year's Premiership.
