Gould, Moylan and coach Anthony Griffin met Monday morning to address some “problems” which had surfaced this year with reports circling the Penrith captain could leave the club.

Gould says that is not the case, however, the talented back is not expected to take part in the Panthers’ finals campaign.

“Sometimes these things take two days- sometimes they can take a long time,” Gould said

“I don’t think it’s overly major, but, we have noticed some things that have been out of character for Matt which has probably led to the types of stories we have seen in the media the past few days.

“When we got around and spoke to everyone there were some things and we knew we had to get to the bottom of this for his own well-being.”

Gould said Moylan would undergo counselling in a bid to help the 26-year-old return to full health.

“He is going to get professional help and he is keen to do that. Hopefully he bounces back here in a few weeks,” Gould said.

“From our discussions today he has probably been bubbling under the surface for some time and it’s just frustration at the moment.

“He’s having trouble dealing with life as a professional footballer and we want to get that back on track for him. “

Gould said Moylan would remain at the club long-term with the NSW rep signed until the end of 2021.

“Right from the first words that came out of his mouth today, Matt was committed to the club,” Gould said. “He loves the club and loves the Panthers and wants to be here for the rest of his career. We signed him for five years only 12 months ago and certainly want that to be the case. We will do everything in our power to make that possible for him.

“I want him to get away from the pressures he is under for a while and reflect on why he is a professional footballer and what goes with that.

“He was quite receptive to that and by the end he was quite relieved.”

Moylan had struggled with the added pressure of the captaincy and may not return to the role.

Peter Wallace has been named at captain against Manly this week.

“We will discuss that when he comes back and we will make a decision.” Gould said.

Moylan was suspended earlier this year after leaving the team’s hotel in Melbourne to go drinking following a loss to the Storm.

“That wasn’t a great result that night and was probably the start of things we started to notice throughout the year,” Gould said.

“These are all symptoms of other problems and we want to get the professionals in to make sure we know what that is.”
