Midfielder Shaun Higgins will remain at North Melbourne until at least the end of the 2019 AFL season.
Higgins and North agreed on the one-year extension on Friday, with his contract initially meant to expire at the end of 2018.
The star midfielder, 29, has been in top form for the side this season despite their on-field struggles.
Higgins has averaged 22 disposals and five tackles in his 15 games in 2017, however North remain second bottom on the ladder.
"As long as the club felt I could be a benefit to the team, I had no hesitation in signing an extension, knowing that I still have my best footy ahead of me," Higgins told NMFC.com.au.
"I’ve loved my time at Arden Street and while this year has been somewhat disappointing, I'm really excited by what the future holds and strongly believe we are on the right path."
North's next game is against Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
