The 29-year-old was last week placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond but avoided a conviction after pleading guilty to a cocaine possession charge from early May.

Kenny-Dowall was also previously charged with 10 domestic violence offences but was later found not guilty on all charges.

The New Zealander, who made his NRL debut at the Sydney Roosters in 2007 and has played 224 NRL games, said he wanted to move on from his recent issues.

“I am putting my recent challenges behind me and look forward to starting this new chapter at the Knights," he said.

“Newcastle is a proud rugby league community and I want to repay the Club for the faith they have shown in me.”

For Kenny-Dowall, joining the Knights provides a great opportunity.

“I am really fortunate to have had a successful career so far; I look forward to joining the Knights and having a positive impact on the Club,” Kenny-Dowall said.

Knights CEO Matt Gidley said he was optimistic Kenny-Dowall could move on from his off-field problems.

“We welcome a player of Shaun’s talent and experience to the Club,” Gidley said.

“Shaun is an international and premiership winning player and I have no doubt he will impress both on and off the field.

“While Shaun has been through a difficult period recently, following our discussions we are confident he will make a positive contribution to the Club and community.”

Kenny-Dowall is unavailable for selection this week due to a hamstring injury.
