Nick Kyrgios had his standard on-court meltdown as the underprepared Australian lost to Kevin Anderson in the second round of the French Open.

Kyrgios received a point penalty for smashing his racket six times until it broke during a changeover. And at one point in the fourth set, after dropping his serve on the way to a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 defeat, he asked a spectator in the crowd for a beer.

The 22-year-old later admitted he was not mentally or physically ready for the Roland Garros tournament due to injuries and the recent Kyrgios has been struggling with hip and shoulder problems, but said his training schedule was also affected by his granddad Christos passing away in April.

"After my grandpa passing, I just lost a lot of motivation to do anything, really," Kyrgios said. "When I was back home, it was tough. I mean, I can't talk about it. I can't.

"I haven't really put together any good training in the last couple weeks. Obviously, just trying to manage some niggles. And, obviously, I haven't really structured any good training in the last five weeks,” he added.

"So I don't think I was match-ready to play best-of-five sets, but he played well today. He was too good."
