The 32-year-old underwent surgery earlier this year and reports from those close to the club suggest he will not return to the NRL.

The two-time premiership centre is known for his toughness and played through injury for most of his career, but with his long-term health at risk, Matai is expected to retire.

The injury is taking longer than first thought to heal and he is unlikely to be cleared to play.

It is understood insurance should cover his entire contract for 2017.
