Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has responded to the selection of controversial player Andrew Fifita in the Indigenous All Stars team.
Fifita has been issued with a breach notice from the NRL following his well-publicised public support of convicted one-punch killer Kieran Loveridge but was selected by the fans in the Indigenous team.
Fifita was overlooked for the Four Nations tournament and snubbed of the Clive Churchill Medal despite a match-winning performance in Cronulla’s maiden premiership win over Melbourne.
The NRL issued the breach notice to Fifita on Tuesday with a $20,000 expected to put an end to the drawn out process.
The 27-year-old is not expected to be banned from playing and has five days to respond to the notice.
Meninga, who is also the World All Stars coach, was vocal in supporting Fifita’s omission from the Four Nations squad and took a similar line when questioned about his inclusion in the pre-season representative match.

“I would suggest to you that is a good point — the character of the person on and off the field really matters when you select representative footy sides,” Meninga said.
Indigneous All Stars coach Laurie Daley said he was comfortable with Fifita’s selection.
“The selection criteria was he was available so the fans have picked him so he’s been included,” he said.
“I’ve coached him before and certainly had no issues with him. He’s always proud and he loves playing in this game.
“It will depend on what the breach notice says and whether it’s a fine or whether he’s looking at missing games. He has been selected subject to him being cleared.
“Andrew Fifita had a terrific year last year. I’d say he’d be looking to put it all (the Loveridge saga) behind him over the next three or four days.”
