SWIMMING: A SNAPSHOT
Australian swimming has negotiated some choppy waters in recent years. Perhaps we as a nation are so used to our elite performers bringing home World and Olympic gold medals that any lapses are akin to national emergencies? It sometimes feels that way, but for the stars who represent this country on the world stage, they are at the pointy end of one of the greatest feel-good club scenes in the land. There are an amazing 904 swimming clubs in Australia, with almost 80,000 members between them. Remember, these are the competitive swimmers, not the millions who regularly take to the water for recreation and fitness.
That rich Olympic tradition has created some of the greatest legends in Australian sport, from Annette Kellerman through to Cate Campbell. At the recent World Championships, Australians brought home a brace of world titles that sees our top athletes primed to plunder the pool at next year’s Rio Olympic Games.
