In an interview with fellow former NRL star Willie Mason, Mullen will tonight reveal on Seven News never before-heard details about his horrendous career-ending episode.

“I just want to say that I take full responsibility for what happened,” Mullen will reveal. “I’m not here to blame anyone else. After the injection, I tore my hamstring two weeks later; so whatever was supposed to go in there didn’t even work anyway.”

On May 3 the NRL announced that its Anti-Doping Tribunal, chaired by former High Court Judge, the Hon Ian Callinan AC QC, had found that Mullen had committed the following violations of the Anti-Doping Policy: presence of the prohibited substance Drostanolone, an anabolic steroid and; use of the prohibited substance Drostanolone.

The Tribunal imposed a suspension of four years to run from the date of Mullen’s provisional suspension which began on 17 January, 2017.

Now 30 years old, Mullen, a one-club player, appeared in 211 games for his beloved Newcastle Knights over the course of a decade between 2005 and last year.

He played one State of Origin match for New South Wales in 2007. His other representative duties included four games for Country against City Origin between 2009-14.

Mullen played his last NRL game on September 3 last year. At Kogarah Oval on a Saturday afternoon, the Dragons won a thriller against the Knights 28-26 in the final round of the 2016 NRL regular season.

Mullen’s candid and open interview will be aired on Channel Seven tonight.
