Tennis legend Martina Navratilova reacts with fury after "unmotivated" Bernard Tomic loses at Wimbledon
Bernard Tomic has been told by tennis legend Martina Navratilova to go and get another job if he’s so “bored” of playing.
Tomic has sparked a fierce reaction after admitting he could not care less about losing in the first round of Wimbledon on Tuesday.
The Australian went down meekly in straight sets against Mischa Zverev and later said he’d struggled to get motivated for one of the biggest tournaments of the year.
Navratilova, nine-time Wimbeldon women’s singles champion, says that attitude is insulting to tennis as a whole and also rips off the fans.
"It's disrespectful to the sport and disrespectful to the history of the sport,” she said. “If you can't get motivated at Wimbledon it's time to find another job.
"The spectators paid good money to come here and watch Wimbledon and the guy shows up and doesn't try, he can't be bothered. Just stay at home."
Tomic had said in the wake of his 6-4 6-3 6-4 defeat against Zverev: “Really, me being out there on the court, to be honest with you, I just couldn’t find any motivation
“I don’t know why, but, you know, I felt a little bit bored out there.
“I feel holding a trophy or, you know, doing well, it doesn’t satisfy me any more. It’s not there. I couldn’t care less if I make a fourth-round US Open or I lose first round. To me, everything is the same.
“I’m going to play another 10 years, and I know after my career I won’t have to work again.”
