BOWLS: A SNAPSHOT

Check out these numbers for a so-called “minor” sport in Australia. Playing members: 194,112. Club volunteers: 75,000! Welcome to bowls territory – a sport uniquely connecting with local communities here in Australia and around the world!

Lawn bowls is also one of the few sports which can be played for a lifetime. Various items of modified equipment can enable a bowler to continue with the sport – long after their body first tells them it’s time to slow down! For example, a “Bowler’s Arm” allows people with a hip or knee injury to continue to enjoy the sport of lawn bowls well into their later years.

But don’t pigeonhole this as an old person’s sport! Don’t forget we had Kelsey Cotterill representing Australia at international level – when she was all of 15!

Social bowls occurs at almost every club Australia-wide, with invitations open to people of all ages. And unlike some sports, women can play competitively right alongside the men – and even whip them.
